When Samsung launched Bixby, its own AI-powered digital assistant, with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, it received a lot of flak from consumers and reviewers alike for its poor functionality. Even worse, its much-anticipated voice functionality only arrived in September, months after the Galaxy S8 first launched with Bixby. And even then the voice functionality was limited to only two languages.

Samsung now seems to be making amends as a new report claims the company will be unveiling Bixby 2.0 at its developer conference on October 18. Bixby 2.0 will feature integration with third-party services, apps, and non-smartphone devices. Samsung has already been working on integrating Bixby with other home appliances so news about its integration with other devices should not come as a surprise.

The Korean company has also appointed a new executive, Chung Eui-suk, to look after the development of Bixby and ensure its performance is up to the level of Google Assistant and Siri. He will also be heading Samsung’s other artificial intelligence efforts. Samsung’s mobile business chief Koh Dong-jin has himself admitted that Bixby 1.0 was launched in an unfinished state and the company plans on supplementing the incomplete parts with the launch of Bixby 2.0.

“We will supplement the incomplete parts of Bixby 1.0 at Bixby 2.0,” said Koh Dong-jin, Samsung’s mobile chief, at a local Korean media conference held during the Galaxy Note 8 launch.

In its current state, Bixby’s performance is outright dismal and it hardly serves any purpose. Its voice aspect is somewhat useful thanks to its deep integration on Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8, but its limited language support is a huge bummer.
