Samsung’s mobile payment service, Samsung Pay, might not have been as big of a success as Apple Pay, but it definitely is popular in the U.S. and South Korea among owners of handsets that support the payment service. One major reason why Samsung Pay has been trailing Apple Pay in terms of popularity and consumer awareness, is its limited availability and support for banks.
While Samsung cannot expand support for Samsung Pay to its other devices due to hardware limitations, the company is doing the next best thing possible: expanding the availability of the service to other regions of the world. According to sources of SamMobile, Samsung will be expanding its mobile payment service to China, Spain, and the UK in Q1, 2016.
Apple Pay is already available in the UK, but it is crippled by the security PIN restrictions in the country and support for limited banks. Apple has been trying to bring Apple Pay to China since its launch in October 2014, but has been unsuccessful so far due to issues with certain Chinese government policies and the rate of commission that banks will have to pay for every on Apple Pay transaction.
If Samsung is able to bring Samsung Pay to China before Apple, it would lead to a huge boost in its popularity among consumers and a significant jump in its user base.
