A senior executive of Samsung Display revealed that the company will soon launch a flexible display for smartphones that can be folded into half by the end of this year.

This piece of information was revealed by Lee Chang-hoon, vice president of the business strategic team of Samsung Display. He further said that the company will “secure production capacity of 30,000 to 40,000 [flexible displays each month] by the end of next year” and that no company except for Samsung will have “this great production capacity by 2016.”

Lee, however, also revealed that no finished product has been decided on yet by Samsung to take advantage of this display.

The senior executive also stated that Samsung Display is looking to expand its customer base for AMOLED screens beyond Samsung. The company intends to achieve this by reducing the manufacturing costs of AMOLED displays.

“One of the superior things about AMOLED is that [because it has no backlight] it can become cheaper to produce compared to LCD. We are prepared to compete directly with LCD. AMOLED is similar in price to LCD, but better capability wise. We are confident that more people will buy AMOLED,” Lee added.

The company will be reducing its reliance on Samsung Electronics for its AMOLED displays over the next three years and balance its captive and outside account to 50:50.
