According to South Korea’s Electronic Times, Samsung plans an initial production run of about 5 million units of its upcoming 2017 flagship: the Galaxy S7.
The report cited unnamed sources and said that Samsung will be launching two different variants of the Galaxy S7 this year: a 5.2-inch variant with a flat-screen, and a 5.5-inch variant with a display that curves on both its edges. The former variant will just be called the ‘Galaxy S7’, while the latter will be known as the ‘Galaxy S7 edge’.
Of the 5 million units, Samsung intends to produce 3.3 million units of the regular Galaxy S7 and around 1.6 million units of the curved Galaxy S7 edge.
The report also claims that Samsung plans on launching the handset in February, though that seems unlikely to me given Samsung’s previous history. It is likely that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in February at Mobile World Congress 2016, with the handset going on sale in late-March or early April.
Samsung has previously sold as much as 10 million units of its Galaxy S handset within a month of its launch. Compared to that, a figure of 5 million sounds low, but with its falling sales and saturating smartphone market, this definitely sounds like a safe move from Samsung.
