Samsung today announced that it would be launching Samsung Pay Mini in the first quarter of the year, with a pre-launch trial beginning in the company’s home country in South Korea from February 6. Samsung Pay Mini will work with all Android 5.0+ devices and let users easily make online payments.
Unlike Samsung Pay which can be used to make payments at retail stores, Samsung Pay Mini will exclusively work for online transactions which is why the company will launch it for non-Samsung Android devices as well. Samsung will be releasing a companion Samsung Pay Mini app which can be used to easily make payments for online transactions. I
n addition, Samsung will also update its Samsung Pay app for compatible Galaxy S devices to add a Shopping feature that will let users directly shop with popular local malls that have partnered with the Korean giant.
Samsung has also earlier stated that it eventually plans on bringing Samsung Pay to other Android devices. However, looking at how the MST technology used by Samsung Pay gives the company’s handsets an edge over Apple Pay and Android Pay, its unlikely that Samsung is going to open up Samsung Pay to other OEMs anytime soon.
As for Samsung Pay Mini, I’d expect Samsung to make a formal announcement of the global launch of the service at MWC in Barcelona later this month.
