All the brains, and more importantly all the money, is in Silicon Valley. Samsung wants to harness that talent, so what better way to do that than to open an office in the region? According to C|Net, the company will break ground on a new office that will accommodate 2,000 employees once it’s done in mid-2015. The building will be 10 stories tall and supposedly very modern looking as you can see from the render above.
The big question, really, is whether Samsung will opt to build their own software and services, partner with big players, or a mix of the two. All of Samsung’s phones come with Facebook pre-installed, for example, but they also come with Samsung’s music and video store that I doubt anyone uses. So should Samsung start bundling apps like Spotify and Rdio or just buy them outright?
I don’t know what the right answer is, but I’m becoming increasingly averse to vertical ecosystems that make it difficult to mix and match services. Google’s services suck on Windows Phone. Microsoft’s apps are incredibly poor on iOS and Android. Apple stuff doesn’t work on anything but Apple’s stuff. You get the idea.
Maybe I’m naïve, but I remember a time when companies were proud of being the best at one thing, and you, as a consumer, combined all these one trick pony companies into a workflow that was best suited to your needs. These days that’s frankly impossible to do.
