A new report suggests that Samsung is finally ready to launch its first foldable smartphone in the third quarter of this year. Dubbed Galaxy X, foldable smartphones have existed in Samsung’s laboratories since the last few years. The company has also being showing prototype foldable smartphone at trade shows in recent years.
As per the source of The Korea Herald, Samsung is expected to release at least 100,000 units of its foldable smartphone in Q3 of this year. The foldable display of the smartphone will face outward when folded, with the device expanding into a 7-inch tablet when fully unfolded.
“Samsung is expected to roll out more than 100,000 units of fold-out devices in the third quarter,” a source told The Korea Herald. The smartphone, whose panels face outward upon folding, may be used as a 7-inch tablet when unfolded, he said.
However, Samsung is yet to take a final decision on the matter. The company is still apprehensive about launching the device due to profitability and marketability issues. The final decision on this matter will be taken once an internal rejig occurs at Samsung, which usually happens in December this year but was delayed last year due to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. The internal executive-level reshuffle has now been delayed to February or March of this year.
The report also states that LG is also considering launching 100,000 units of its own foldable smartphone in fourth quarter of this year. The company has been working on its foldable smartphone technology since two to three years, and in its current state, the company’s technology is more advanced than Samsung.
