According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung has once again regained its position as the number one smartphone maker, by volume, in the world in Q1, 2015.
In Q4, 2014, Apple had managed to sell as many iPhones (74.5 million) as Samsung sold its Galaxy handsets thereby holding the honors with the Korean company for the largest smartphone vendor in the world.
In the first quarter of 2015 though, Samsung has once again regained its position as the largest smartphone maker in the world thanks to an increase in sales of its low- to mid-range devices, and a decline in iPhone sales.
The analyst firm estimates that Samsung shipped 83.2 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2015, while Apple shipped 61.2 million iPhones in the same timeframe. Despite regaining its position as the largest smartphone maker in the world, Samsung’s marketshare has declined by 7.1 percent on a Year-On-Year (YoY) basis. On a Quarter-on-Quarter (QoQ) basis though, its marketshare increased from 19.6 percent to 24.1 percent.
Apple, on the other hand, saw its marketshare dip slightly to 17.7 percent from 19.6 percent in the previous quarter.
Lenovo-Motorola managed to retain their third position by grabbing 5.4 percent of the marketshare and shipping 18.8 million smartphones. Huawei came in fourth with a marketshare of 5 percent and shipped 17.3 million smartphones in Q1, 2015.
Overall, Strategy Analytics noted that smartphone shipments grew by 21 percent from Q1, 2014 to 345 million in Q1, 2015.
It was only earlier today that Samsung announced its Q1, 2015 financial results where it reported an increase in its smartphone shipments and profit margins despite a 11 percent drop in revenue.
