Samsung’s President DJ Koh has confirmed at CES 2018 that it would be unveiling the Galaxy S9, its first flagship smartphone of the year, at MWC next month.

The president also confirmed that the release date of the handset will also be announced at the event.

There were already rumors of Samsung unveiling the Galaxy S9 at MWC 2018 so the company’s head of mobile division has only confirmed these rumors here.

Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy S8 in March last year at a separate Unpacked event. The handset’s launch was delayed due to a change in Samsung’s quality assurance policy following the Note 7 debacle in 2016.

President Koh also confirmed that the Korean company will be launching its foldable smartphone sometime next year. He notes that the biggest issue with a foldable smartphone is the UX which the company is looking for ways to overcome.

Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus at MWC this year then. The smaller Galaxy S9 will feature a single lens setup at the rear, while the bigger Plus variant will feature a vertically placed dual-camera setup with 2x optical zoom. The fingerprint scanner has also been repositioned to make it easier to reach. Samsung is also revising its software and using an upgraded iris scanner with a higher resolution on the Galaxy S9 for faster unlock times and better reliability.

Leaked renders already point to the handsets featuring a design that is largely similar to their predecessor, with the major changes happening under the hood.

With a late-February unveiling in MWC, the Galaxy S9 will likely go on sale by the third or fourth week of March in most parts of the world.
