In less than a week from now, Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ — its flagship phones for 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. The handsets have already leaked plenty of time over the last one month but today’s leak provides us with almost every possible information about them. Even better, the press photos of the handsets have been leaked as well.
The detailed specs of both handsets had already leaked before so there’s nothing new in that regards. The Galaxy S9 will feature a 5.8-inch QHD+ Infinity Display, while the S9+ will feature a 6.2-inch QHD+ AMOLED display. Both handsets will make use of either the Snapdragon 845 chipset or the Exynos 9810 chip depending on the market they are sold. The bigger Galaxy S9+ will sport 6GB RAM, while the Galaxy S9 will sport 4GB RAM.
The bigger differentiating factor between the two devices will be their camera setup this year. At the front, both variants of the Galaxy S9 will make use of an 8MP f/1.7 selfie shooter. At the rear though, the Galaxy S9 will come with a single 12MP shooter featuring a variable F/1.5-2.4 aperture. The Galaxy S9+, on the other hand, will feature a dual-camera setup. The primary 12MP camera remains the same as on the Galaxy S9, with the secondary 12MP telephoto lens being added for 2x optical zoom and portrait photos. Even better, both handsets will be capable of recording slow-motion videos at up to 960fps at 720p.
The handsets will also feature USB-C, AKG tuned stereo speakers, an iris scanner, a repositioned fingerprint scanner, face unlock, and fast charging. The smaller Galaxy S9 will come with a 3,000mAh battery, with the bigger S9+ making use of a 3,500mAh battery. Both handsets will be running on Android 8.0 Oreo based on Samsung Experience 9.0. Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in four different colors, though their availability will vary depending on the demand. This includes Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Lilac Purple, and Titanium Gray.
Samsung will start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ soon after their official unveiling, with the handset going on sale in selected markets from March 8.
Our Take
At this point, almost everything about the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ has leaked. However, it will still be interesting to see how Samsung has managed to implement variable aperture on the rear 12MP camera of the handsets and how much of a difference it makes in real world use. With the Pixel 2 offering stellar camera performance and Samsung hyping up the camera performance of the Galaxy S9 before its official unveiling, the battle between flagship smartphones in terms of camera performance has surely gotten interesting.
