After failing to include an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy Note 8, Samsung was widely expected to make use of the scanner on the Galaxy S9. However, local news reports from Korea suggest that might not be the case as the company is still struggling with some issues with the tech.

Instead of using an in-display fingerprint scanner, Samsung will continue to use a traditional fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S9 which will be located at its back. The reports also claim that Samsung has finalised the specifications of its upcoming flagship device with pilot production beginning in October. The handsets are slated to enter into mass production in December.

It is unclear if Samsung will continue to place the rear fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S9 at the same location as the Galaxy S8 and Note 8. The fingerprint scanner location on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 is an ergonomic disaster which is further worsened by the poor performance of the scanner.

With the Galaxy S9 unlikely to come with an in-display fingerprint scanner, Samsung might try to incorporate the tech into the Galaxy Note 9 which will launch in the second half of the year. Unlike Apple which has possibly decided to replace Touch ID with Face ID on all its iPhones from next year, Samsung will continue to include a fingerprint scanner on its devices along with other unlocking methods like iris scanner and face unlock.
