An alleged photo of the Galaxy S9’s retail box has leaked revealing its complete specifications. It is unclear if the leaked image of the retail box is genuine or not, but given that the handset is just over a month away from its official unveiling and how its design closely matches the retail box of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, its unlikely to be fake.
The retail box confirms that the Galaxy S9 will come with a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, an 8MP selfie camera, IP68 water and dust resistance, an Iris scanner, 64GB of internal storage, and wireless charging. The box also mentions that the handset will come with 4GB RAM which would likely end up disappointing many. It is possible that we can see Samsung include 6GB of RAM on the bigger Galaxy S9 Plus.
The retail box also provides some interesting details about the rear camera of the Galaxy S9. It states that the handset will come with a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP camera featuring a variable aperture of F/1.5 to F/2.4. Samsung had unveiled its new ISOCELL camera sensors a couple of months ago featuring a variable aperture and 1.22um large pixels. The wider F/1.5 aperture could be used while taking photos in low light while the smaller F/2.4 aperture could come in handy while taking photos in daylight. The Super Speed camera will also be capable of recording videos in “Super Slow-mo” which likely hints at the device being capable of recording slow motion videos at up to 1,000 fps.
Other interesting tidbits about the Galaxy S9 mentioned in the box include stereo speakers and earphones tuned by AKG. Samsung had bundled AKG tuned earphones with the Galaxy S8 last year and rumors pointed to the company bundling wireless earbuds from AKG with its flagship smartphone this time around. However, that does not seem to be the case here. It will also be impressive if Samsung manages to include stereo speakers on the Galaxy S9 despite its limited bezel space.
Our Take
Samsung did not make major changes to the Galaxy S8’s camera when compared to the S7. This time around though, the Galaxy S9 is expected to sport a vastly superior camera. While a camera with a variable aperture would definitely be useful, it remains to be seen if the wider aperture in low-light would help make up for the reduction in individual pixel size.
If you are disappointed by the lack of a dual camera on the Galaxy S9, don’t be. Rumors point to Samsung including a dual camera sensor on the Galaxy S9 Plus, with the smaller Galaxy S9 featuring only a single 12MP sensor.
Samsung will launch the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus at MWC 2018.
