At its developer conference in San Francisco where Samsung unveiled its first foldable smartphone and One UI, the company also confirmed that it will release the Pie update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 in January 2019. The company will also launch an open beta program for Pie for the Galaxy S9 later this month.

The open beta Pie program for the Galaxy S9 will first launch in the United States, South Korea, and Germany before it expands to other Asian countries.

The Android Pie update will introduce Samsung’s new One UI on the two devices. The new UI is simpler to use and allows the user to focus on what they are doing by hiding all the unnecessary options and buttons aside. Leaked Pie firmware for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 have already confirmed that One UI will come with slightly rounded UI corners, a new system-wide dark theme, revamped system apps, new system icons, and more.

Google first released Android 9.0 Pie to AOSP and its Pixel devices in August so Samsung is taking its sweet time to bring the update to its flagship Galaxy devices. On the flip side though, at least the company is ensuring the update will be worth it with a completely new UI and plenty of new features and enhancements.

Do note that a January release does not mean that all Galaxy Note 9 and S9 units across the world will get the update at the same time. Carrier units will have to wait for a few more months for the update, with unlocked units in different regions getting the update in stages.
