In a surprising move, Samsung has started rolling out the official Android 9.0/One UI update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. For now, the update is only rolling out to S9 owners in Germany but a wider rollout should be on the cards.

This is the first time that Samsung has rolled out a major Android version to its flagship device so soon. Google released the final version of Android Pie to AOSP and OEMs in the second half of August so it has taken Samsung around four months to bring the update to its 2018 flagship device.

As mentioned, the update is rolling out to unlocked variants of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in Germany for now. However, a wider rollout should follow soon. Samsung is also rolling out the final OTA update for Galaxy S9 owners who were a part of the One UI beta program. Carrier variants of the S9 will only get the update after a few weeks or months after getting the necessary certification.

With the Android 9.0 Pie update, Samsung is also debuting its new One UI. Redesigned from scratch for devices with large screens, the UI is optimized for one-handed use. The update will bring plenty of new features for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ including an AI Scene Optimiser mode in the camera app, Adaptive battery, enhanced Always On Display, navigation gestures, Dark mode, revamped system apps, Lift to wake gesture, and more.

While there’s no word on the Galaxy Note 9 getting the update, it should get its stable Pie/One UI update early next month.
