As per industry sources, the Samsung Galaxy S8 pre-order numbers were 40 percent higher than the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 on the first day the pre-orders went live.

The numbers have been estimated based on the data received from all carriers and Samsung’s online and offline stores by evening 6 p.m. For comparison, Samsung received pre-orders for 400,000 Galaxy Note 7 units between August 6-18 last year.

Analysts and industry experts believe that the Galaxy S8 could break the pre-order numbers set by the Galaxy Note 7 despite the handset’s pre-order period being two days shorter. Galaxy S8 pre-orders run through April 17 in Korea before the phone goes on sale on April 21.

It is estimated by analysts that Samsung will ship around 60 million units of the Galaxy S8, but Samsung Securities Co. — Samsung’s own financial arm — predicts a much lower number of around 45 million units.

The initial response to the Galaxy S8 has been pretty positive, with consumers liking its Infinity Display and various color options. Samsung’s marketing push is also helping the pre-orders numbers as the company is bundling Gear VR or other goodies with the handset in most markets of the world.
