The folks over at DisplayMate have gone ahead and published their in-depth results of the tests they conducted on the Infinity Display of the Samsung Galaxy S8, and the results are overwhelmingly positive.
Samsung’s flagship phones have always been known for their excellent displays, and with the Galaxy S8, Samsung has taken things to a whole new level. The 5.8-inch QHD+ display on the Galaxy S8 features a 3K (2960 x 1440) resolution, supports 4 different screen modes with 3 different color gamuts, and is certified for Mobile HDR Premium. That’s not all, though. Samsung has improved the OLED panel on the Galaxy S8 in almost every way possible. DisplayMate notes that the Galaxy S8’s OLED panel is capable of reaching a higher brightness level of over 1,000 nits that helps improve screen eligibility in direct sunlight. It also has a larger native color gamut with DCI-P3 support, improved color accuracy and viewing angles, and improved automatic brightness thanks to the use of Dual Ambient Light sensors. The team also notes that Samsung has improved the Always On Display mode by operating it with an IC hardware rather than app software.
In its testing, DisplayMate notes that the color accuracy of the Galaxy S8’s AMOLED panel is “likely considerably better than your living room 4K Ultra HD TV”, and that the display panel used on the handset is among the first to reach full 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space thanks to the use of a new high saturation Deep Red OLED. And despite a barrage of improvements, the Galaxy S8’s OLED panel has improved optical and power efficiency that should help with battery life.
DisplayMate’s conclusion of the Galaxy S8’s display panel pretty much says it all:
The Galaxy S8 is the first in a new generation of OLED Smartphones that have a Full Screen Display design. It has many major and important state-of-the-art display performance enhancements, features and functions, with mobile OLED display technology now advancing faster than ever. The Galaxy S8 is the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever lab tested. So the Galaxy S8 becomes the Best Performing Smartphone Display, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.
So, it looks like there is more to the display of the Galaxy S8 than just the lack of bezels. It is commendable how Samsung has single-handedly been pushing the mobile display industry forward with its AMOLED panels every year. No wonder the company is absolutely dominated the OLED market.
