DxOMark has put the Samsung Galaxy S8’s 12MP rear shooter through its comparison and given it a score of 88. This is just a point below the Google Pixel and similar to the Galaxy S7, HTC 10, and the Xperia X Performance.
It is also a couple of points higher than the iPhone 7 which scored 86 points in DxOMark’s benchmark.
In their photo benchmarking suite, DxOMark notes that the Galaxy S8 has very fast and accurate autofocus in all lighting conditions. This is due to the phone coming with Dual Pixel AF technology which is usually found on higher end DSLRs. It also notes that the phone has good color rendering in low light conditions and has very good shadow details for high dynamic scenes. It also notes that noise is kept to a bare minimum while taking photos with the flash on the S8.
Not all is well with the S8’s imaging performance though. DxOMark found in their benchmark that there is a strong variation in sharpness visible in the field on photos taken from the S8. Similarly, there is a slight loss of detail in low contrast areas irrespective of the lighting conditions along with the loss of very fine color details.
When it comes to videos, DxoMark praised the effective stabilisation, fast and accurate autofocus, color rendering, and the low noise level in bright light conditions from the videos taken from the Galaxy S8. However, they did note that there is a judder effect visible in videos during panning shots, with frame shifting also being visible every once in a while.
Overall, DxOMark ranks the 12MP shooter of the Galaxy S8 highly and just a notch below the Google Pixel. In our own camera comparison, we also found the Pixel to take better photos than the Galaxy S8, though it’s the latter which offers a better experience overall.
