After ditching the in-display fingerprint scanner technology for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung is reportedly planning on using Qualcomm’s in-display fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S10 next year.

Famed Samsung leaker Ice Universe also says that Samsung will not be adopting the optical fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10 since it does not offer a good experience as per a statement by Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh.

While we have already seen Vivo, Huawei, and a few other Chinese OEMs launch smartphones with their in-display fingerprint scanner, their unlock speed is not as good the fingerprint scanner used in existing smartphones. This is where Qualcomm’s solution comes in which was first released in the middle of 2017. Unlike offerings from Synaptics, Qualcomm’s in-display fingerprint scanner is based on the ultrasound technology which is superior to that of its rivals.

We are yet to see any phone launch with Qualcomm’s in-display fingerprint scanner tech so its difficult to ascertain just how much better — if at all — its solution is.

The report also claims that Samsung will be launching three different variants of the Galaxy S10 in 2019 thereby taking a strategy similar to Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup. The lineup will comprise of three models with different screen sizes: 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.4-inch. Out of the three, the 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch models will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner while the 5.8-inch variant will feature a traditional fingerprint scanner to keep its price down.

Interestingly, the report says that apart from the Galaxy S10 and its other flagship handsets due to be unveiled in 2019, Samsung will also use the in-display fingerprint scanner on some of its premium A-series models. If true, the move will allow the company to differentiate its A-series handsets with a hoard of other smartphones from Chinese OEMs that usually offer better specs and features at the same price point.
