Samsung’s onslaught of smartphones in all shapes and sizes is continuing with the Galaxy Grand Prime, the newest iteration of the company’s Galaxy Grand lineup that it has made official in India.
With the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung took a step forward in the front-facing camera department by switching to a 3.7-megapixel sensor, coming closer to the 5-megapixel cameras the competition has begun using in recent months. With the Galaxy Grand Prime, Samsung is completely ending that gap – the Grand Prime is the first smartphone from the Korean manufacturer to sport a 5-megapixel camera on the front.
Sadly, that high-resolution front-facing camera is the only thing the Galaxy Grand Prime has going for it. The rest of the hardware is as run-of-the-mill as it gets for Samsung’s lower mid-range devices – there’s a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, a 5-inch qHD (540×960) display, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, 8GB of expandable internal storage, a 2,600 mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s usual TouchWiz topping.
Coming back to the front camera, the Grand Prime has an 85 degree wide-angle lens that Samsung believes will help users capture great group images. However, that might not be enough to justify the Rs. 15,499 (approx. $250) price tag of the device, though hopefully its cost will go down soon after it becomes available for purchase.
Samsung hasn’t said when the Galaxy Grand Prime will go on sale and in which markets, though it will be offered in white and grey colors whenever that happens.
