A Bloomberg report details that Samsung is done redesigning the Galaxy Fold to fix its screen reliability issues which plagued the review models of the foldable device.
While Samsung has started the production of the Galaxy Fold once again, it is unclear as to when it would be able to offer the device for sale. As per the report, Samsung has increased the protective film wrap around the entire screen and it now flows into the outer bezels. This would make it almost impossible to remove the protective film by hand. Additionally, the hinge has been re-engineered and has been pushed “slightly upward from the screen” which helps stretch the protective film when the device is unfolded.
That tension makes the film feel harder and more a natural part of the device rather than a detachable accessory, they added. The consequent protrusion, almost imperceptible to the naked eye, may help reduce the chance of a crease developing in the middle of the screen over time, one of the people said.
When the Galaxy Fold was initially pulled by Samsung due to screen reliability issues, many expected that the company would be able to find a workaround to the problem within a few weeks. However, it has now been two months since Samsung pulled the Galaxy Fold and there has been no official statement from the company as to when it plans to put the device back on sale.
While Samsung is holding an Unpacked event on August 7 to unveil the Galaxy Note 10, it won’t be relaunching the Galaxy Fold at the event.
The delay of the Galaxy Fold has also led Chinese smartphone giant Huawei to push back the launch of its foldable device: the Mate X. The device was supposed to go on sale in Europe in June but Huawei has delayed the launch for additional testing after the Galaxy Fold matter unfolded.
