Take apart a Samsung phone and chances are you’ll see a “Made in Korea” sticker inside. It’s a Korean company after all, so why not? According to ETNews, that’s soon going to change in an effort increase margins. The report says Samsung will soon start doing what everyone else in the smartphone industry does: outsource. A company called BYD, which apparently assembles the HTC One, will be put in charge of making the Galaxy S4 Mini.

We’ll probably hear more about this as time goes on, but no one should be surprised. If China is “good enough” to make the Apple iPhone, it’ll be good enough for Samsung’s smartphones. That being said, with Samsung not having full control of the assembly process, the first few devices to roll off those production lines might not be the best in the world.

That’s purely a guess, however, and I hope I’m totally wrong.

Curiously, the ETNews piece also says that by freeing up in-house production to Chinese companies, Samsung can focus on their “first attempt for [a] premium smartphone.” Now that’s interesting, but I’m not going to start speculating about Samsung’s 2014 portfolio since we still have the rest of 2013 to go.
