Bixby isn’t even a year old, seeing the light of day on the samsung-Galaxy S8 earlier this year, but Samsung is already prepared to start talking about Bixby 2.0.

Today, the company officially announced the next major version of its helpful software, calling it Bixby 2.0. According to Samsung, this is a “bold reinvention of the platform,” and that the software will have overall improved natural language capabilities. What that means for the end user is better understanding of what is being said, more natural commands and improvements to complex processing.

With the future rollout of Bixby 2.0, Samsung wants to expand the features availability. That means putting it on just about anything Samsung-branded, including refrigerators, TVs, and home speakers. Not only that, Samsung wants to make it so that developers have a chance to put Bixby on even more things, which means opening it up.

Samsung will open the Bixby SDK to developers, and open up the software in general. Select developers will have access to a pre-release beta. More developers will have access to the Bixby SDK at some point in the future. At some point down the road, Samsung says it will open it up to all developers.

Bixby 2.0 sounds like it will be a big release for Samsung, and one that will bring the feature to even more devices. It will be interesting to see if Bixby gets as widespread access on devices as, say, Amazon’s Alexa or even Google’s Assistant. There are a lot of digital personal assistants out there, and having access to a variety of options on a single devices might be the way to go.
