Samsung-KitKatSamsung has so far been peculiarly quiet about how many Galaxy devices will get the impending Android 4.4 KitKat update and when, even with the OTA already rolling out to the Note 3. But the ominous silence is now behind us, as a list of 14, that’s right, 14 smartphones and tablets due for a chocolaty software bump has gone official.

First things first, let us underline the announcement comes from Samsung USA and refers to stateside models, plus “availability varies by carrier and product”. Translation: it’s out of Sammy’s hands now, so complain to your wireless provider for delays or cancelations.

That said, the vast list contains hardly any surprises. Nor does it lack obvious Android 4.4 candidates. Leading the pack, you have the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, Note 2, S3, Galaxy Mega and Note 10.1 2014 Edition.

Possibly the most popular high-end Samsung gadgets around, they are tipped to score KitKat ahead of everyone else, during the next few months. Then there’s the S4 kin group, consisting of three mid-range and upper mid-range handhelds: S4 Active, S4 zoom and mini.

Joining the Note 10.1 2014 Edition, the older original Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 3 and Note 8.0 complete the slate gang, though odds are their KitKat upgrades are a long way from completion. Finally, two underdogs made their way on the slate, the Galaxy S3 mini and T-Mobile-exclusive Galaxy Light, with probably the most optimistic ETAs set for, say, late Q3 2014.

As you probably guessed by now, Samsung “neglected” to issue timelines, leaving us to speculate and guesstimate. Good thing at least Galaxy S4’s staggered updating process started earlier this week, on Sprint.
