Post the Galaxy Note 7 battery fires, Samsung is being overly cautious with the Galaxy S8. It was already revealed that Samsung would be sourcing batteries from Japan’s Murata Manufacturing and Samsung SDI for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. The latter had supplied the company with faulty batteries for the Note 7.
Now, further diversifying its supply chain and to reduce reliance on any single supplier, Samsung has reportedly also signed up Sony for supplying batteries for the Galaxy S8.
A unit of Sony’s arm in Japan will be supplying batteries to Samsung for the Galaxy S8. A previous report had confirmed that the Galaxy S8 will come with a 3000mAh battery, while the Galaxy S8+ will make use of a 3500mAh battery.
Three different battery suppliers will ensure enough diversity in Samsung’s supply chain. It will also ensure that no particular supplier is under stress or has to meet tight deadlines. One key reason behind the battery fires of the Galaxy Note 7 was Samsung’s rush to get the product out to the market quickly and later on, the hurry to get replacement units to the market as soon as possible. This put undue pressure on battery suppliers who had to work overtime to meet the company’s demands.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 at a separate event on March 29, with the handset going on sale by mid-April.
