You know all those rumors about the Note III having 3GB of RAM? Well, they might be legit. Samsung just published a press release this morning saying they’ve begun mass producing “three gigabyte (GB) low power double data rate 3 (LPDDR3) mobile DRAM” for smartphones. It’s basically two stacks of three 20 nanometer four gigabit chips sandwiched on top of each other.

Too many numbers, I know.

So why not 4 GB of RAM? Good question. Part of it has to do with cost, putting that much RAM in a smartphone isn’t going to be cheap, but the big part is a lack of 64-bit compatibility. We’re not going to see 64-bit ARM chips until 2014, and even that’s a sketchy target. Some people, myself included, think we’ll have to wait until 2015!

But anyway, back to the 3GB of RAM, when will we see a phone with that much RAM inside? My gut says the Note III, which will be announced during the first week of September in Berlin.
