Rumors about a jumbo Samsung tablet have been floating around the web since June. Today, however, we finally got some “detailed” information thanks to a guy that somehow attended a secret Samsung briefing in Korea. He says Samsung’s 12.2 inch tablet is called the Galaxy Note Pro. Its display will put out 2560 x 1600 pixels. Do the math, and that comes out to a little less than 250 pixels per inch. The Note Pro will run Android 4.4, have a Snapdragon 800 under the hood, 3 GB of RAM, a massive 9,500 mAh battery, and the whole package is said to weigh 750 grams.
Now just to compare those numbers with something that’s already out on the market, let’s look at the iPad Air. It has a smaller 9.7 inch screen, it weighs 469 grams, and it has an 8,830 mAh battery. The fourth generation iPad, the “heavy” one, weighed 650 grams and had an 11,560 mAh battery. So this Galaxy Note Pro will be a full 100 grams heavier than even that, yet have a smaller battery.
But what concerns me the most about this new tablet is the price. Because it’s called the Note Pro, and because it has a huge screen, I’m going to automatically assume it’s going to cost more. But how much more? Samsung’s 10.1 inch Galaxy Note starts at something like $529. Will the Note Pro be $100 more? Will it be $200 more? Will anyone seriously consider buying it?
Anyway, expect an announcement in Q1 2014, probably even next month at CES.
