Cyanogen Inc. has been going through pretty tough times recently. The company’s various projects have failed to take off and recently, it also announced a layoff that would see its workforce being trimmed by 20%.
Despite these turmoils, Cyanogen Inc.’s CEO Kirk McMaster has remained upbeat about the company. Cyanogen a.k.a Steve Kondik himself has also clarified that CyanogenMod continues to do well and is not going anywhere. However, it looks like there is another controversy in the rising for the company.
It was reported by a developer of CyanogenMod that the ROM has around 50 million users worldwide. However, as per some internal documents obtained by The Information, that number seem to be grossly overestimated, with the active userbase of the ROM being around 25 million.
Two people who have had access to Cyanogen’s internal data said as of this summer, the company had about two to three million weekly active users of both CyanogenMod (versions released starting in early 2015) and its commercial cousin, Cyanogen OS. (Mr. Kondik [co-founder and CTO of Cyanogen], in the interview, said there were “somewhere in the neighborhood of” four million Cyanogen OS users.
Considering that Cyanogen Inc’s funding and valuation all depend on the popularity of CyanogenMod and CyanogenOS itself, these grossly overestimated numbers are not going to do any good for the company. It will be interesting to see how this revelation affects Cyanogen Inc’s valuation and funding in the future.
