Motorola’s new Moto X has a feature that gets a lot of attention: touch-less control. By simply saying “OK, Google Now”, your phone wakes up, even if it’s across the room, and awaits your command. Is this feature a Motorola innovation? Not really. Qualcomm is responsible for most of the magic here. And while yes, the Moto X will likely have an exclusive on touch-less control in the near term, the Snapdragon 800 comes with this functionality built-in.

Don’t believe me? Visit Qualcomm’s own website and watch the video in the lower left quadrant. In Qualcomm’s demo, an employee says “Hey Snapdragon”, and the phone suddenly wakes up. Unlike the chip in the Moto X, the Snapdragon 800 will let you program whatever catchphrase you wish. If you want to say “Mr. Spock” and then ask your phone to do a Google search, you’ll be able to make that happen.

Why am I even writing about this? Two reasons. One, I live in Europe, which means even if I want to buy the Moto X, I can’t. Two, we’re going to see a ton of phones using the Snapdragon 800 come out during the next few months. The LG G2, Galaxy Note III, Nexus 5 (maybe?), and so on and so on.

What makes for a great demo today will become just a bullet point in the span of 90 days.
