Slow-motion video recording was a rare feature in Android phones until last year. However, ever since Apple released the iPhone 5s with slow-mo video recording at 720p@120FPS, all major OEMs have been included it in their flagship devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is no different and offers three different speeds to record videos in slow-motion. Read below to find out more about this feature and how you can record slow-motion videos on it.
Don’t consider recording videos in slow-motion a gimmick. In fact, it is a great way to capture some tense moments in a game or kids playing around. Well done slow-motion videos look really good. Don’t believe me? Check out the video below and see for yourself.

Like most of the other Android devices in recent times and the iPhone 5s, the Galaxy S5 can only record slow-motion videos in 720p resolution. While 720p videos are more than adequate even by today’s standard, some people might frown upon the lack of recording them in full HD resolution.
The slow-motion mode on the Galaxy S5 is a bit different than that of the iPhone 5s. While the latter allows users to increase the playback speed of the video with some parts still in slow-mo mode, the Galaxy S5 offers no such feature. It does, however, offer users the option to record slow-motion videos in three different speeds: 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8. This means that for every 1 second worth of footage you record, the S5 will playback 2 seconds, 4 seconds and 8 seconds worth of video.
Usually, the 1/2 record pace should be more than enough for most users. The 1/8th mode only makes sense while recording videos of some extremely moving subjects or scene.
Interestingly, Samsung has also included the option to record videos with 2x, 4x and 8x playback speed, in case you find a use case for it. You can record videos in slow-motion or fast motion from inside the camera app by going into the Settings menu and then selecting the Recording mode option. Depending in our choice, you can select to record videos either in slow or fast motion along with your desired speed.
