Competition in the streaming music scene is heating up. Spotify has been making its service more affordable and soon we will have a heavyweight like Beats music kicking off its own service in the next few days. Now, Rdio has hopped on the bandwagon and announced it will start offering free web access to its catalog of songs for users who live in the US. Rdio announced this new, free web service today on its Rdio blog. The service will provide streaming for free as long as you use the web player, but there will be ads. These take the form of “short and sweet” messages that include “new feature announcements, messages from partner brands, notifications about exclusive content, and other helpful tips.”  But it’s free, right?

Customers who want an ad-free experience on mobile or the web can grab an Rdio unlimited subscription for $9.99 per month.
