Qualcomm today unveiled its new premium mid-range chipset, the Snapdragon 712 Mobile Platform. It is the successor to the Snapdragon 710 chip unveiled by Qualcomm last year.

The Snapdragon 712 is based on a 10nm FinFET processor and features Qualcomm’s Kyro 360 CPU, Adreno 616 GPU, and a Hexagon 685 DSP. When compared to the Snapdragon 710, the newer Snapdragon chip offers up to a 10 percent performance improvement. This performance improvement primarily comes from a small bump in clock speed — 2.2GHz vs 2.3GHz. Otherwise, the Snapdragon 712 is still an octa-core chip.

It also features an X15 LTE modem which offers 4×4 MIMO and LAA connectivity. It still does not support Gigabit LTE speeds, though the speeds offered (up to 800Mbps) is faster than what LTE-A is capable of.

There’s also the Spectra 250 ISP which offers 4k video capture and playback support, video noise reduction, and 10-bit color capture support. The inclusion of Qualcomm’s AI Engine means the Snapdragon 712 is efficient at AI-based tasks as well.

Lastly, there’s support for Quick Charge 4+ which means any properly supported Snapdragon 712- powered device will be able to charge itself from 0-50 percent in just 15 minutes.

It is interesting to see Qualcomm reveal the Snapdragon 712 so soon. Despite all the hype created by the chip maker last year, we saw the Snapdragon 710 make its way inside only one notable phone — the Nokia 8.1. We are going to see Snapdragon 712 powered devices hit the market in the second half of this year. For now, Google is expected to unveil a Snapdragon 710-powered Pixel 3 XL Lite at MWC 2019 later this month.
