After a formal announcement yesterday, Qualcomm today provided more details about its Snapdragon 845 mobile platform which will power the next-generation of Android smartphones in 2018.

As revealed earlier, the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform will be built on Samsung’s 10nm LPP FinFET node that offers 10-percent performance improvement or a 15 percent improvement in power efficiency.

The chip will feature Qualcomm’s custom Kryo 385 CPU which has been made from the ground up. Technically, Qualcomm has based its Kyro 385 CPU on ARM’s Cortex-A75 and A55 CPU designs and tweaked them further. This allows for a 25 percent improvement in performance compared to the Snapdragon 835. The chip features 2MB of shared L3 cache which should help reduce memory latency between the different core clusters and make them more power efficient. The four performance cores of the octa-core chip can reach as high as up to 2.8GHz while the power efficiency Cortex-A75 cores can reach speeds of 1.7GHz.

On the graphics front, the Snapdragon 845 features an Adreno 630 Visual Processing Subsystem — just a fancy way of calling it a GPU — which promises a 30 percent improvement in performance while consuming less power than the Adreno 540. The GPU also supports displays of up to 2K x 2K resolution with 120Hz refresh rate for a fluid VR experience.

The Hexagon 685 DSP on the Snapdragon 845 has been optimised for AI and imaging and offers a 3x performance boost in AI tasks over the Snapdragon 835. The Aqstic audio codec in the mobile platform offers 130dB of dynamic range and keyword detection while consuming a very little amount of power.

Qualcomm has also completely redesigned the Spectra 280 ISP inside the Snapdragon 845 from the ground up for improved performance. The ISP is now capable of recording slow-motion videos at 480fps in 720p resolution along with 4K+ videos at 60fps. It can now also capture up to 64x more color information than before and make use of multi-frame noise reduction and accelerated software image stabilisation to reduce the load on the GPU. Other notable features include 10-bit HDR support, Rec. 2020 gamut for 4K/UltraHD content, and more.

Finally, the Snapdragon 845 features Qualcomm’s X20 LTE modem which is capable of offering download speeds of up to 1.2Gbs and upload speeds of 150Mbps. It features 5x CA, 4×4 MIMO, dual-SIM and dual-VoLTE, and support for 60GHz 802.11 ad Wi-Fi. There’s also Bluetooth 5 support along with aptX and aptX HD support. Qualcomm says that it has made its own proprietary improvements to Bluetooth 5 as well which allows supports for low-power wireless earbuds and direct audio broadcasts to multiple devices.

To improve security, the mobile platform features a Secure Processing Unit which has its own dedicated chip. It is used to store any important biometric information like fingerprint, iris etc which are all encrypted. The chip is completely separate from the rest of the mobile platform which makes it immune to breaches on a software or app level.

To round things off, the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform supports Quick Charge 4+ which is up to 30 percent more efficient and 15 percent faster than Quick Charge 4.0.
