If a report coming out of China is to be believed, Qualcomm’s next generation chipset — the Snapdragon 820 — is being tested for use in 30 different smartphones.

Qualcomm has had a rough 2015 with its high-end Snapdragon 810 chipset suffering from overheating and performance issues. The poor performance of the chip led Samsung, one of Qualcomm’s biggest customer, to switch to its own Exynos chipset for the Galaxy S6 and Note 5.

However, if reports are anything to go by, the company’s upcoming Snapdragon 820 has already impressed many OEMs with its performance and thermal nature, and as many as 30 different smartphones from different OEMs are being planned around it. This news comes straight from Qualcomm’s president, Frank Meng, so there is no reason to doubt its authenticity.

Even though the first Snapdragon 820 chips are at least six months away from launch, rumors and reports about it have been extremely positive. A previous report claimed that Qualcomm managed to improve the performance of the chipset by an additional 15-20 percent through tweaking, without increasing the frequency of the chipset.

Qualcomm has already revealed that the Snapdragon 820 will be powered by its custom 64-bit quad-core Kryo cores clocked at up to 2.2Ghz, an Adreno 530 GPU, and feature its new Spectra ISP.
