Alongside its Snapdragon 835 chipset, Qualcomm also announced Quick Charge 4.0 The latest version of the company’s quick charging technology is finally compliant with USB-IF certification and USB-PD (Power Delivery).

With Google highly recommending OEMs to support USB-PD on their devices, this was a much-needed move from Qualcomm. This move from the chip giant will also ensure compatibility between different fast charging solutions available on the market, with no particular side effects.

Qualcomm says that Quick Charge 4.0 is up to 20 percent faster, or up to 30 percent more efficient, while being up to 5-degrees cooler when being charged. It says that when charged with a compatible charger, a Quick Charge 4.0 compatible device would be able to last for an additional 5 hours after 5 minutes of charging. Additionally, it is also capable of charging a device with a 2750mAh battery from 0 to 50 percent in just 15 minutes.

Qualcomm has managed to achieve these blazing fast charging speeds by using newer versions of its Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV) algorithm and Dual Charge. The former allows Quick Charge 4.0 compatible devices to request power within 20mV for finer control and better thermal management. As for Dual Charge, supported devices will come with a second power management IC that would allow the charging current to be divided for better thermal performance. There is also a new Battery Saver feature that is aimed at extending the life cycle of the battery of the phone and other internals.

For now, Qualcomm’s newly unveiled Snapdragon 835 chipset is the only one to support Quick Charge 4.0. Thus, we should see devices with Quick Charge 4.0 support hit the market by the end of first quarter of next year.
