Remember when that small Chinese company you’ve never heard of accidentally said that their next phone was going to be powered by a 2.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8974AC? Well, that specific chip has now been announced, and from here on out it shall be known as the Snapdragon 805.

What’s so special about the 805 compared to the 800?

Those 2.5 GHz cores inside the 805 are not just 200 MHz faster than those in the Snapdragon 800, they’ve also been updated to the Krait 450 architecture versus the Snapdragon 800’s Krait 400 cores. With regards to power, there’s new Adreno 420 graphics processor on-board that’s said to be 40% faster than the one inside the Snapdragon 800. And Qualcomm also says this new chip is the first to be capable of both playing 4K content and recording it.

When will you be able to buy a device with this chip inside?

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 805 is sampling now and that it should be in a smartphone near you during the first quarter half of next year. That’s just in time for the Galaxy S5 from Samsung, the HTC M8, and whatever LG and Sony decide to name their next flagships.

The Snapdragon 800 supports Qualcomm’s new Gobi 9×35 modem, which handles Category 6 4G LTE. What the hell does that mean? That’s 300 megabit per second cellular connectivity, which is twice as fast as today’s fastest networks in countries like South Korea.
