Not every product is a smash-hit, no matter how much excitement gets built up for it before launch. Case in point: OUYA. The Android-powered video game console that was meant to revolutionize living room gaming never really found a foothold, with results far less than stellar — and much worse than the expectations. Now, according to a new report, it looks like Ouya, the company behind the similarly named console, are looking for the exit.
The report was originally published by Re/code on September 2, and it outlines the process that Ouya is going through in an effort to be acquired by a big-name company. The report suggests that most of the focus has been on companies located in China, including Tencent and Xiaomi, while in the United States both Google and Amazon have reportedly been presented with options.
However, it looks like a purchase from a Chinese company is more likely, and with all eyes currently on Xiaomi. That move would not come as a surprise, though, seeing as the latter corporation already includes the OUYA software (what was eventually spun-off from just a single platform idea, which, obviously, didn’t catch on, either) in their smart TVs.
One of the many moves that Ouya tried to stimulate attention for its OUYA console was offering a $59.99 one-time subscription deal for access to over 800 games. That effort came at the beginning of July, but it would seem that, ultimately, nothing came of it. In January of this year, one of the OUYA founders left the company, which wasn’t seen as a good sign at all.
Did you pick up an OUYA? Did you get rid of it, or is it something you use every day?
