LG launched a smartphone called the Optimus G in September of last year. Two months later, we’d find out that it was the phone Google decided to use as a template for the Nexus 4. Then, in early 2013, LG announced a successor the to Optimus G called the G Pro. It came with Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 600 processor and a 5.5 inch 1080p screen. The Japanese version of the G Pro had a smaller 5 inch screen however, to suite that particular local market.
Which brings us to today’s news. That 5 inch G Pro for Japan has been given a makeover, sporting the look of the 5.5 inch model, and a new name: Optimus GK. If you’re confused, then I’m sorry, just know that you’re not alone. LG’s smartphone portfolio is slowly becoming as complicated as Samsung’s.
But back to the Optimus GK, what else does it have other than a Snapdragon 600 and a 5 inch 1080p screen? Under the hood is an impressive 3,100 mAh battery. That’s 500 mAh more than the battery inside Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and 800 mAh more than HTC’s One.
Unfortunately, the GK runs Android 4.1.2, and knowing LG it might take a while for it to get the newest version of Google’s mobile OS.
Will this thing be sold outside of Korea? LG is holding an event in New York City this week, and I’m almost positive that the 5.5 inch G Pro will be there, but you never know. Frankly, I see them holding off and instead waiting to make the Optimus G2 their new flagship. That phone is rumored to be announced this summer.
