Oppo’s online only sub-brand Realme today unveiled its first handset in India, the Realme 1. The budget handset will take on Xiaomi’s Redmi handset and given the price-to-performance ratio it offers, it sure seems a viable competitor.

The phone is made out of plastic and composite polymer, but it stands out thanks to the Diamond Black design of the rear as seen on Oppo’s flagship smartphone: the F7. This helps give the phone a more premium look and feel than what its price tag and look would suggest.

At the front, the Realme 1 houses a 6-inch FHD+ 18:9 aspect ratio display. It is powered by an octa-core MediaTek P60 chipset running at 2GHz based on the 12nm fabrication process. Other specs include 3/6GB RAM and 32/128GB of storage space. The handset also features a dedicated microSD card slot, Wi-Fi n, Bluetooth 4, and a microUSB port. It also includes an 8MP selfie shooter, 13MP rear camera, and a 3,400mAh battery. The front camera is also used to offer Face Unlock on the handset which Oppo is hoping makes up for the lack of a fingerprint sensor on the device.

On the software front, the Realme 1 runs on ColorOS 5.0 based on Android Oreo. This means you will get plenty of customization options to play around with, though the UI might not be to everyone’s liking.

Oppo is also hoping to give the Realme 1 an edge over its competition with excellent after-sales service. The company says that it will be able to resolve 90 percent of the issues with Realme 1 in just over an hour.

The Realme 1 first on sale on Amazon India from May 25 for Rs 8,990, with the 6GB RAM/128GB variant priced at Rs 13,990.
