The Chinese handset maker Oppo has just announced, via Google+, that they’re going to start selling the Oppo N1 next Tuesday for $599 in the USA and 449 Euros in Europe. Why should you care about the N1? Because it’s the first smartphone to ship with CyanogenMod preinstalled. At least that’s the plan. Oppo hasn’t provided any details about how to order a Cyanogen version of the N1 versus an N1 with Oppo’s “Color” Android ROM.

What about the rest of the phone? You’re looking at a 5.9 inch 1080p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, 2 GB of RAM, and then there’s the camera. What makes the N1 special (in the hardware department) is that the 13 megapixel camera is mounted on a swivel. Want to take a 13 megapixel selfie? Just rotate the camera. Want to take a photo of something without looking like you’re taking a photo of something? Swivel the camera 90 degrees. Oppo says that the swiveling mechanism is robust, but I don’t care what anyone says, moving parts are always points of failure.

So should you buy the Oppo N1? The price is attractive, but then again a little bit more money can get you a Samsung Galaxy S4. Also, the N1 doesn’t have 4G LTE, which some of you couldn’t care less about, while for others it’s a make a break hardware feature. Personally, I’m more interested to find out what CyanogenMod does with their “new” hardware partner. The VP of Oppo resigned suddenly and then CyanogenMod announced a few days later that they’re working with someone else on hardware.

Keep that in mind.
