Way back in 2017, OPPO showcased a 5x optical zoom prototype that actually worked, with plans to introduce it in a smartphone at some point after that.

If you are wondering if you missed an OPPO-branded smartphone with a 5x digital zoom, you didn’t. It’s been two years but the company actually never launched that smartphone with the technology baked in. And now it turns out OPPO is ready to show off an even better optical zoom. At least, that’s what we’ve learned from a teaser image shared online recently.

The teaser has the tagline, “ten times the view, see you soon”. The rumor mill has actually suggested in the past that OPPO would unveil this technology either at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show or at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. However, CES 2019 has come and gone so we won’t see the technology there. OPPO did announce the 5x zoom on February 27 two years ago, so it could be near MWC this year, too.

The question at this point is whether or not we’re going to see a prototype of a 10x optical zoom or something final. The likely bet here is that OPPO is going to show off something unfinished, especially if we’re thinking back to the 5x zoom that has yet to materialize in an actual consumer-ready device.
