The latest data collected by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker indicates that Oppo’s R9s was the world’s third most smartphone in the world in Q1, 2017. The handset shipped almost 8.9 million units and captured 3 percent of the market share worldwide.

Oppo’s strong performance should be strongly applauded especially since the brand has little to no presence in Western markets. However, in India and China, Oppo smartphones are incredibly popular and sell like hot cakes. The R9s is the Chinese company’s current flagship handset and features dual-SIM connectivity, VOOC fast charging, and a 16MP selfie shooter.

Smartphone popularity

Samsung’s 2016 variant of the Galaxy J3 and J5 came in fourth and fifth position, respectively, with the former shipping 6.1 million units and the latter shipping 5 million units. The handsets were especially popular across Europe and Asia. The Galaxy J3 captured 2 percent of the global smartphone market, while the Galaxy J5 managed to capture just over 1 percent of the market to complete the top 5.

The lack of its flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 7, did affect Samsung’s popularity but the company should make up for the lost ground with its excellent Galaxy S8 in Q2, 2017.

As for the most popular smartphone, the crown for that went for the iPhone 7 as it shipped a staggering 21.5 million units in Q1, 2017. Its larger brother, the iPhone 7 Plus, came in second and shipped 17.4 million units worldwide. The phones captured 6.1 percent and 4.9 percent of the worldwide market share in Q1, 2017 respectively.
