Oppo R9 and R9 Plus

Oppo today released its new premium mid-range smartphones with a unibody metal build: the Oppo R9 and R9 Plus. Despite the former lacking a ‘Plus’ moniker, it comes with a large 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display, with a screen-to-body ratio of almost 78%.

The Oppo R9 Plus lives up to its ‘Plus’ moniker by featuring a gigantic 6-inch Full HD AMOLED display. Both phones feature a mere 1.66mm thin bezels on their sides, which the company has managed to achieve by using a new breakthrough display manufacturing and gluing process.

The R9 is powered by a Octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor, and comes with 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It also features a fingerprint sensor on its front, with the rear housing a 13MP shooter with an f/2.2 aperture that is also capable of recording videos in 4K resolution. The handset also comes with a 2,850mAh non-removable battery with VOOC Flash Charge support.

Its bigger sibling, the R9 Plus, is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor, and features 4GB RAM, 64/128GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and a fingerprint scanner. It features a 16MP f/2.0 aperture shooter at the rear and uses a sensor from Sony with PDAF. The R9 Plus comes with a 4,210mAh battery with VOOC Flash Charge that allows it to provide up to 2 hours of use after only 5 mins of charging.

The highlight of both phones, however, are their 16MP front facing ‘Pegasus’ camera with a 78-degree wide angle lens. While smartphones are now coming with 5MP and 8MP front shooters, none of them come with such a resolution this high.

The iPhone 6-lookalike run on Android 5.1 Lollipop, with Oppo’s latest ColorOS 3.0 running on top of it. The company has optimised the latest version of its skin to improve performance by over 25% and make it more battery friendly.

The Oppo R9 wil be available in China from March 24th in Rose Gold and Gold colors, while the R9 Plus will go on sale from April 12th. The price of the smaller of the two handset starts from RMB2,799 ((420), with the R9 Plus being priced at RMB3,299 ($500).
