Oppo today unveiled its latest smartphone — the R1C — with a sapphire glass back, which is scratch and shatter resistant.

Under the hood, the R1C is a mid-range device that packs in an octa-core chip from Qualcomm, a 13MP rear camera and more. Sapphire glass panels have been used by a very selected few OEMs until now to protect the display on the front of their device. However, Oppo has used the sapphire glass panel on the back, which has allowed it to make the device a mere 6.85mm thin.

Additionally, the glass back is highly reflective that gives the phone a character of its own. The mid-frame of the device is made of chamfered metal as seen on the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Alpha.

The full specs of the Oppo R1C are as follows:

  • 5-inch 720p LTPS display
  • 64-bit Octa-core Snapdragon 615 CPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot
  • 13MP F/2.0 Sony IMX214 rear camera with LED flash
  • 5MP front camera
  • 2420mAh battery
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE
  • Dual SIM connectivity with one nano and one micro-SIM slot
  • ColorOS 2.0.1 (Based on Android 4.4 KitKat)

The R1C will be available in white and blue colors for 2,499 RMB (~$400) from January 20 in China.
