Oppo Under Display Camera Demo

After teasing in-display camera technology earlier this month, Oppo has today announced that it would be demoing the phone at the upcoming MWC 2019 Shanghai. The event is scheduled to take place from June 26-29 this month.

Oppo is only promising to demo the phone and it is unlikely that the device will see a formal launch at the event. This is because in-display camera technology is still in early stages of development and there’s a lot of work that still needs to be done to ensure that the selfie camera quality is not compromised in any way. Right now, the under-display technology blocks the amount of light reaching the camera sensor thereby affecting its camera performance. This is why Oppo is currently only planning on demoing a phone with an under-display camera at MWC 2019 Shanghai.

Apart from Oppo, Xiaomi has also teased its own in-display camera solution. Vivo, Samsung, and other companies are also working on their own under-display camera technology but it is still not yet ready for primetime.

Under-display camera technology will allow OEMs to completely get rid of notch or pop-up camera solutions on their devices and offer a true bezel-less smartphone. However, despite the demos from notable smartphone makers, the technology is still a year or two away from showing up in a consumer smartphone.
