Oppo has traditionally used MWC to announce breakthrough technologies that it will be using in its upcoming smartphones. This year, the company is teasing the unveiling of a “breakthrough” new mobile camera technology that it is calling the “5x Project.”

The company notes in its press release that its new camera technology will provide users with “unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images.” If the project name is anything to go by, Oppo seems to be working on some form of digital/optical zoom for its smartphones’ camera.

Oppo has had a meteoric rise in the smartphone market in 2016, with its shipments growing by over 122 percent. The company even managed to beat the likes of Motorola/Lenovo and Xiaomi to secure a spot among the top 5 smartphone makers of last year.

Oppo phones have been known for the performance of their front-facing camera which is a key reason for them selling like hot cakes in Asia. It will be interesting to see if Oppo’s ‘5x Project’ will help in further improving the performance of the front camera on its phones or not.

Oppo will be providing more details about its ‘5x Project’ at MWC on February 27.
