OpenAI’s ChatGPT has rolled out an advanced search feature, now available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users on the web and mobile apps, aiming to transform how users access timely information from the web. The update provides rapid responses, web-linked sources, and answers on current topics, from news and sports scores to weather and stock prices.

ChatGPT’s new search capability marks a significant leap forward, blending the strengths of conversational AI with real-time, sourced information. This feature allows users to get fast, up-to-date answers that are backed by reputable web links.

Pam Wasserstein, President of Vox Media, praised the tool, saying, “ChatGPT search promises to better highlight and attribute information from trustworthy news sources, benefiting audiences while expanding the reach of publishers like ourselves who produce premium journalism.”

The search function is designed to respond intuitively to users’ questions, integrating natural language and relevant sources, which allows for dynamic follow-ups and deeper research within the same conversation. The tool is set to benefit users by enhancing interaction with information, such as live sports results, breaking news, and travel recommendations.

“We are convinced that AI search will be, in a near future and for the next generations, a primary way to access information,” said Louis Dreyfus, CEO of Le Monde, “and partnering with OpenAI positions Le Monde at the forefront of this shift.”

The search feature is powered by an improved model of GPT-4, fine-tuned to understand search-specific queries and supported by OpenAI’s collaborators, including Associated Press, Axel Springer, and Condé Nast. To provide users with diverse and reliable content, OpenAI also allows publishers to opt in to appear in ChatGPT search results.

With feedback from the SearchGPT prototype, OpenAI promises to continue evolving ChatGPT’s search, adding new capabilities for travel, shopping, and voice applications. Enterprise and Edu users can expect access soon, with a rollout for all Free users to follow in the coming months.
