Pete Lau is a name you’re probably not very familiar with, but he made headlines several weeks ago when he announced that he was leaving the Chinese handset maker Oppo. Now Oppo wasn’t really that important to begin with, but the press showered them with attention when they announced that they’re working together with CyanogenMod. Pete was the guy who oversaw the CyanogenMod project, and he felt he could do better without Oppo. And that’s how OnePlus was born.

According to The Verge, OnePlus is a company that “will create a more beautiful and higher quality product.” They’ll do that by “never [being] different just for the sake of being different. Everything done has to improve the actual user experience in day-to-day use.” Fine marketing speak from Pete, but care to offer any specifics?

Here’s what’s known so far: OnePlus will sell their phones online. The first devices will be available during the first half of 2014. According to Engadget, Oppo will even build the first OnePlus phone. And that’s it. No specs, no pictures, nothing.

Does this company have a shot? Of course they do, but you have to realize that “success” has a far different definition for OnePlus than it does for a company like HTC or Samsung. I bet this company won’t sell more than a million phones during their first 12 months of operation. If they make a profit on those devices, then in their eyes that’s considered a success.

I’m genuinely curious to see what these guys come up with.
