OnePlus has been on a roll recently. After the success of the OnePlus 6 and unveiling its monthly software schedule, the company has now rolled out a new OxygenOS beta for the OnePlus 5 and 5T which among other things adds Project Treble support.

When the OnePlus 5T was first launched, many users were bummed out with the lack of Project Treble support on the device. The company then kept mum and did not mention anything about adding Project Treble support to the handset down the line as well.

Project Treble was released by Google as a part of Android Oreo. It makes core parts of the OS and the OEM skin modular in nature thereby making it easier for OEMs to quickly roll out major OS updates for their devices. It is due to Project Treble that the likes of the Mi Mix 2S, OnePlus 6, Nokia 7 plus, Essential Phone, and a few other non-Pixel devices got a Developer Preview build of Android P ahead of the release of the OS.

When used in the right way, Project Treble can help OEMs roll out a major Android OS update to their device within weeks instead of months. However, for this, OEMs need to ensure that they launch or add support for Project Treble in their devices. Google has made Project Treble support mandatory for any device launching with Android 8.0 Oreo, though devices launching with Nougat and then updated to Oreo do not need to meet this mandate.

OnePlus is already pretty good in quickly rolling out OS updates for its devices, but by adding Project Treble support, it can further speed up the entire process. Project Treble support on the OnePlus 5 and 5T will also greatly help the custom ROM community surrounding these devices.

OxygenOS Open Beta 13/11 for the OnePlus 5 and 5T brings plenty of other new changes to the table as well. Below is the official change-log of the update:

It is impressive to see OnePlus continue adding new features to the OnePlus 5 which is now over a year old.

As this is an Open Beta, the OTA update will only show up on devices that are running a previous Open Beta build of OxygenOS. If you are on the stable channel of OxygenOS, you will first have to jump to the beta channel during which all data stored on your phone will be wiped.
