OnePlus today announced a ‘T’ upgrade for the OnePlus 3, dubbed OnePlus 3T. The handset is a slightly more powerful and costlier variant of the OnePlus 3 and comes with a better camera and few other enhancements.
In terms of design, the OnePlus 3T looks the same as the OnePlus 3. This means that you are still getting a unibody aluminum body, with a 5.5-inch display on the front that is protected by Corning’s 2.5D Gorilla Glass. To set the handset apart from the OnePlus 3, OnePlus will be offering the 3T in a new ‘Gunmetal’ color. Contrary to what rumors had suggested, the OnePlus 3T comes with the same 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED display found on the OnePlus 3. Sitting below the display are the capacitive navigation button, with the fingerprint scanner being integrated into the home button.
Inside, the OnePlus 3T is powered by Qualcomm’s performance edition Snapdragon 821 chipset clocked at 2.35GHz. This is paired with a slightly faster clocked Adreno 530 GPU, 6GB LPDDR4 RAM, and 64/128GB of UFS 2.0 storage. Other key specs include a 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and USB Type-C port. To negate the faster and more power hungry process, the OnePlus 3T comes with a larger 3400mAh battery. OnePlus’ excellent Dash Charge feature is also present on the phone that is capable of charging the phone by as much as 50% in just 30 mins.
The biggest upgrade that sets the OnePlus 3T apart from the OnePlus 3 is in the camera department. While there were rumors that the OnePlus 3T will feature an improved rear camera, that’s not the case. The rear camera setup between the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T remains the same. This means that we are still looking at a 16MP Sony IMX298 sensor with OIS and f/2.0 aperture. The EIS implementation has been updated so you should see fewer jerks and shakes in videos recorded with the 3T. The major camera related change is located at the front where the OnePlus 3T features a 16MP shooter, up from the 8MP shooter found on the OnePlus 3.
On the software front, the OnePlus 3T runs on OxygenOS that is still based on Marshmallow. However, there is a new filesystem now which OnePlus says will allow the 3T to open large applications and games faster. It also comes with new system apps like a file manager, music player, gallery app, and more. The Android 7.0 Nougat update for the handset will be released before the end of this year.
The OnePlus 3T will be available in Gunmetal and Soft Gold finish. The
