Up until last year, OnePlus was painfully slow in rolling out major Android updates to its devices. This year though, the company has been trying to turn a new leaf in its book by quickly rolling out software updates for the OnePlus 3. The handset has received steady software updates since its launch adding new features and fixing bugs.
Following that trend, OnePlus’s head of software, Brian Yoon, has announced that the young startup will be rolling out a “community” build of Nougat for the OnePlus 3 by the end of this month. Even better, the company plans on rolling out the final Nougat update for the handset before the end of this year once it fixes all the reported bugs and issues.
OnePlus already rolls out Community build of OxygenOS for OnePlus 3 owners periodically. These community builds need to be manually sideloaded into the handset and contain new features and enhancements. By doing this, the company is able to gather community feedback and fix bugs before being able to do a wider rollout.
The head of software also confirmed that older OnePlus devices like the OnePlus 2 will be getting the Nougat update, though he did not specify a specific timeframe as to when the update will land.
OnePlus has had made lofty promises about its software update pace before as well. However, the company has always failed to live up to its word. So, it will be interesting to see whether this time around OnePlus is able to stick to its word of rolling out the Nougat update for the OnePlus 3 by the end of this year. If it does, OnePlus will finally be able to enter the big leagues of Samsung, HTC, and LG who are also on schedule to roll out Nougat update for their flagship handsets by the end of this year.
